What is spinal manipulation?

Spinal manipulation is a technique where practitioners use their hands or a device to apply a controlled thrust (HVT High Velocity Thrust) to a joint of your spine. The amount of force can vary, but the thrust moves the joint more than it would on its own. Joint cavitation is accompanied by an audible release recognised as a ‘popping’, or ‘cracking’, sound. This sound is not the joints going back in place as often misinterpreted.  It is in fact is rapid release of gas from the joints.  Once the gas has been expelled from the joints it can help with spinal realignment and energy flow up and around the spine.

What can manipulation be used for used

Spinal manipulation is mainly used in the clinic in conjunction with traditional acupuncture.  The two treatments work very well together on a physical and energetic level to help with the conditions listed below

  • for Sciatica
  • for Low-Back Pain
  • facilitate movement
  • for Neck Pain
  • for Headache
  • relieve pain
  • increase circulation
  • relax muscles
  • improve muscle function.

Is Spinal Manipulation Safe?

Spinal manipulation is relatively safe. The most common side effects of spinal manipulation are temporary muscle soreness, stiffness, or a temporary increase in pain.

Serious complications are rare.  Neck manipulation has been linked to small, potentially dangerous tears in the artery walls in the neck, called cervical artery dissections (CAD). These tears are rare but can lead to a stroke. Any kind of sudden neck movement, such as playing sports, getting whiplash, and violent vomiting or coughing may also increase the risk of tears.  The risk of this occurring is extremely low.

Who can have spinal manipulation?

Spinal manipulation can be offered to most patients visiting the clinic.  However, a medical questionnaire must be completed before treatment and your blood pressure may be taken as well

Patients with medical conditions such as high blood pressure, obesity cardiovascular disease, diabetes, diagnosed disc prolapses or osteoporosis will not be offered spinal manipulation at the clinic due to increased risk of complications.I
